Great Britain has made a surprising move, by deciding to ban all petrol and diesel cars in the country, come the year 2040. The Secretary for Environment, Michael Gove, announced the $3.9 billion clean air plan some few weeks ago in the United Kingdom parliament, hoping to address the worsening air quality in the country.
In addition to the ban in Britain, the plan includes a $334 million fund to help local authorities control emissions by retrofitting buses, reprogramming traffic lights, and changing road layouts.
According to a UK government spokesman, he said and I quote
Poor air quality is the biggest environmental risk to public health in the UK and this government is determined to take strong action in the shortest time possible,
This UK bill seems to be in line with a similar announcement made in France last month seeking to ban all cars running on fossil fuels post 2040. Even countries like the Netherlands and Germany have been mulling over the idea.
