Before we proceed, I guess it is also important for you to know the reason why MTN is actually introducing new USSD codes which their subscribers can use to carry out transactions on their SIM. The paragraph below explains the reason why.
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), in March 2023, gave a directive to all telecommunications providers in Nigeria, to begin the process of harmonizing USSD codes. The deadline given to fully implement this is May 17, 2023. At the time this post was written, MTN Nigeria is the first telecommunication company in Nigeria to fully implement this.

Now you have known the reason behind the introduction of the MTN new codes, I guess the next statement that might have caught your is the directive of harmonizing USSD codes, or for all telecommunication companies in Nigeria to use a unified USSD code.
What are Unified USSD Codes?
USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data) is a system used by telecommunication companies to allow users perform certain functions. The functions includes; balance check, airtime recharge, data subscription, accessing value added service, etc.
USSD services do not require an internet connection to function, the main reason why it has been widely utilized. Also. it has been adopted in the banking industry, and virtually every commercial bank in Nigeria has a specified USSD code. The result is that bank account holders can use their bank USSD code to send money, check account balances, and more.
Now, coming back to telecommunication, as many Nigerians are using more than one network provider, the NCC wants to harmonize these codes. This simply means that, as an MTN subscriber, you can now use the same code for airtime recharges, balance check, etc. on Airtel or Glo. I guess this explanation is quite clear enough. So, let us dive into the MTN new codes.
