Least Peaceful Countries in the World According To Global Peace Index 2017

Global Peace index (GPI) measures the relative position of different nations and regions peacefulness. In 2017, it ranked 163 countries, increasing the number from the 121 countries ranked in 2007. The GPI ranked the 163 independent states and territories based on their levels of peacefulness, came up with a report revealing the most peaceful countries and least peaceful countries in the world. In this post, we shall be looking at the top 25 least peaceful countries in the world according to the 2017 GPI report.

The Global Peace Index (GPI)

The GPI is a report generated by the Institute for Economic and Peace (IEP) and developed in consultation with an international panel of peace experts from peace institutes and summarized with data collected and collated by the Economist Intelligence Unit.

The Index report kick-started in May 2007, with subsequent reports being released annually. It is claimed to be the first study to rank countries in the world according to their peacefulness. The brain behind this study is Steve Killelea, an Australian technology entrepreneur.

The GPI measures global peace using three broad themes:

  1. The level of societal safety and security
  2. The extent of ongoing domestic and international conflict
  3. The degree of militarization

Least Peaceful Countries in the World According To Global Peace Index 2017

The 2017 Global Peace index discovered that the world has become a slightly safer place over the past year. However, the political fallout and deep rooted division brought by the United States presidential election campaign has led to reduction of peace levels in North America. Out of all the 163 countries studied, the United States experienced the greatest decline in peace, falling 11 places to 114th most-peaceful country out of the 163 in the index.

In the last GPI report, Iceland was named the most peaceful country in the world, ahead of New Zealand, Portugal, Austria and Denmark. The least peaceful country in the world is Syria, whose civil war is still ongoing till now.

Also according to the report, the presence of civil liberties and freedom of the press have much relationship to peace. The top 25 least peaceful countries in the world are as follows:
